What does the average person know about nutrition? It is definitely more than just eating food. There is good nutrition, and there is bad nutrition. However, most people pay no attention to what they eat. They may say that something is or is not good for their health, but they really have no idea what nutrition is or what it is supposed to do.

Simply put, nutrition is nourishment in the form of food that an individual eats to supply vitamins, minerals, and energy to the body. Nutrition consists of two areas. Macronutrients, which include carbohydrates, proteins, and fat, play an important role in nutrition. These represent the energy producing components of the process.

Carbohydrates in the body breakdown into sugars that the body can easily convert into energy. The proteins breakdown into amino acids, which are the building blocks of the body and are especially useful in building and repairing muscle. The body also needs a certain amount of healthy fats. These fats help the brain to function well, and in regulating hormones.

The other areas of nutrition are the micronutrients. They consist of vitamins and minerals. They may not play as important a role as the macronutrients, but what they do is very important to overall health. Vitamins work as co-enzymes. They are responsible for aiding the process related to some of the chemical reaction in the body.

These are great helpers. The B vitamins are essentially needed to help carbohydrates convert to energy quicker. Calcium operates on two fronts. It takes ups residence in bones and teeth. These two along with the rest of the vitamins and minerals ensure that the body functions better.

Another part of good nutrition is lifestyle. Equally as important as what you eat is how you eat it. This where preparing food properly is vital to good health. Eating foods saturated in fats, overly processed foods, and too much sugar do not contribute to overall good health.

Fiber intake should be a regular part of any diet along with drinking adequate amounts of water. All of this contributes to good health. Other good habits that contribute to healthy living include getting a good night’s rest. The body is remarkable at healing itself if it has the things it needs.

Eliminating as much stress as possible goes a long way developing a healthy lifestyle. Nutrition is more than just eating. How an individual treats their whole, self determines how healthy they will be. The human body is a fascinating organism. If it is treated well it will respond with good health
