Adequate nutrition is critical when it comes to powering through a workout and recovering once that workout is completed. Protein is a nutrient that is important for total health and if you are not getting enough, you will find that your body is not up to the challenge of a workout. You also will not recover as well as you should post-workout.

How Much Protein is Necessary?

Your proteins needs are individualized to you. For example, the amount of protein that your workout buddy needs will be different than what you need. To calculate your protein intake you will need to know your body weight, ideally in kilograms because this just makes it easier to do the math. Those over 18 years of age should be getting eight grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. If you prefer to use pounds, you should be getting 0.36 grams of protein for every pound of body weight.

Why Does the Body Need Protein?

All tissues in the body contain protein and 20 percent of all muscle consists of protein. When you have enough protein in your body, nutrients are properly transported to your cells and enzymes are produced properly. Adequate protein also ensures that waste products in the body are properly carried away. A health immune system and proper hydration also rely on protein.

Is There a Such Thing as Too Much Protein?

Protein is not stored by the body and it is used as it is consumed. Taking in too much of this nutrient can actually result in dehydration, which can negatively impact both your workouts and your general health. It is important to carefully calculate your protein needs and take in this amount each day. This will ensure that your body is getting what it needs to get you through your workouts, to aid in recovery and to promote optimum health.
