Most people who think about eating healthy want to shed a few pounds, but eating for health brings more benefits than just weight loss. While cutting down on saturated fats, switching to whole foods and eating realistic portion sizes can help you trim your hips and belly, feeling good and giving your body the nutrients and fuel it needs to get through the day are just as important. Here are five additional benefits you get from switching to a healthy diet.

  1. A diet that contains lots of fruits and vegetables is high in antioxidants and fiber. People who have a low intake of antioxidants have a higher risk of getting cancer, heart disease and vision degeneration. Fiber helps to keep you full and satisfied while dieting, but it is also important to keep your intestinal bacteria balanced so you stay healthy. In addition, fiber works to lower cholesterol levels.
  2. The more processed a food is, the fewer nutrients it has, so packaged and canned food can leave you feeling tired and drained. Switching to lean meats, fresh produce and whole grains can result in more productivity, increased stamina, stabilized mood and the increased energy you need to enjoy exercising.
  3. Many individuals are severely deficient in folic acid. This micronutrient helps the body create red blood cells. Low levels of folic acid are associated with higher levels of homocysteine in the brain. That increases your risk for stroke, osteoporosis and clinical depression. Folic acid is found in dark green leafy vegetables such as romaine lettuce and spinach.
  4. Without a healthy immune system, the body cannot fight disease. Vitamin C, legumes and other protein foods increase production of white blood cells. Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and nuts help keep the immune system strong and functioning correctly.
  5. Water is one of the most important nutrients needed for a healthy diet. It flushes out toxins, transports water-soluble vitamins and helps the liver process stored body fat. By drinking plenty of water throughout the day, the body stays well hydrated resulting in healthy nails, hair and beautiful skin.
